Grade 4 example sequences: the audit you asked for (6 October 2026)
Every example sequence in Grade 4 now keeps minimal difference at the class boundary. We found 114 sequences across the 38 topics. 54 passed your rule before the audit; all 114 pass now. The fault you named, the bike and the bird, was the commonest one: in two of every three failures the near miss was right but sat beside the wrong neighbour, so the object or the scene changed with the verdict.
What was wrong, in your terms
- A right near miss beside the wrong example. Dew after a dry-day cloud. A hawk and mouse after rain on grass. A caterpillar after pond algae. Tina's eyes after a dog's floppy ears. Each non-example was good; its neighbour was not the same thing.
- Every flip on a new object. Friction helpful or unhelpful: brake, then door, then drawer, each a new scene with a new verdict. Instinct or learned: a new animal at every flip.
- Two things changing at once. Six weather-or-climate sentences that changed the town, the weather and the time together. Igneous clues that moved two features at once.
- Frames drifting. The same judgement said three different ways across a run.
What was done
- Unrendered topics (31 of 38): fixed in the text. The fix was almost never new content: the non-example now sits inside the last positive's own picture (the same grass on a clear morning; a caterpillar on one of the oak's leaves; the same dog's floppy ears; the same bike brake, squeezed then let go), or the run was reordered so the near miss meets its true neighbour. Frames made identical; connectives fixed (But at a flip, And for the same class).
- Topics you signed off (1, 2, 3, 11): left as they were, on your word. The audit found faults there too (Topic 1's helpful/unhelpful run, Topic 2's fair-test run, Topic 3's tray of things, the demo's criterion run); the records hold the self-check tables, nothing was changed.
- Rendered sample topics (14, 23, 32, 34): the article and the items are fixed; the script is not touched. Two audio edits by id are written and HELD until your verdict on the sample page: Topic 14 lessons 1 and 3, Topic 23 lesson 1.
- Your check: a sample of 16 changes, before and after. Tap under each; your verdict tells me whether the rest stand.
- A mechanical twin now runs. Every sequence lesson carries a machine-readable block of its cases; the vault's sweep S118 fails any consecutive pair that changes more than one feature or changes the object at a boundary, and both grades run it from now on.
Two shapes of minimal difference, now written into the skill
Where the class is a FEATURE of one thing (kinetic energy, a solution, friction helpful), the same object carries the flip and one feature moves. Where the class is a KIND of thing (producer, fuel, extinct, instinct), the thing must change at the flip and everything else holds: the place, the light, the drawing. The skill now says both, with the audit's examples.
