James's notes on Topic 30 — triage (2 October 2026)
Source: reviews/james/NOTES_G3T30_2026-10-02.md. Two notes (L04, the summary). None of this topic's videos exists, so every change is a text edit; nothing is committed.
In plain words
L04 says "so you can see the faint star", and it now teaches the lens: "The glass inside is a round disc that makes far things look bigger. That disc is called a lens." — explain, then label — with "lens" added to the topic's terms, a recognition item in L04's quiz before the typed recall in the practice set. The summary opens "Here's everything we found out about stars" and the brightness line names the things: "How bright a star looks depends on how big it is, and how far away it is." — never "two things", and no "and bright" (your word: avoid intrinsic brightness here).
The table
| his note (verbatim) | action | where |
|---|---|---|
| "'So the faint star shows' --> so you can see the faint star." | applied in forest, article, script, fb and why | content/G3T30_lessons.py L04 |
| "i feel like we wanna mention that the telescope has a glass disc inside it called a lens, and that magnifies the star, so they look bigger." | applied: article "The glass inside is a round disc, and it makes far things look bigger. A round glass disc that makes far things look bigger is called a lens."; script beat 4 the same, with a cut-away cue; forest line; terms lens; coined_at L04; a recognition MCQ ("What is the disc called?" a mirror / a lens / a window) in L04's quiz; a typed recall in PRACTICE after the telescope item. The article's "But the stars still look like tiny dots, even through the telescope" is cut so the page does not contradict "makes far things look bigger" at this grade; the Moon's craters carry the point | L04; G3T30.py terms, PRACTICE |
| "i think just go straight into saying: 'Here's everything we found out about stars'" | applied | G3T30.py summary beat 1 |
| "that's three things! For now i'd just say: How bright a star looks depends on how big it is, and how far away it is. - let's avoid talking about intrinsic/absolute brightness here, and avoid specifying that it only depends on two things, just say the things." | applied everywhere: lexicon, L03 forest, article (subtitle "What decides how bright a star looks"; the One/Two lines folded into the one sentence), the quiz stem ("What decides how bright a star looks from Earth?") and its options/fb/why, the summary, the practice item's fb and why; the figure two_things_bright retitled "How bright a star looks" with panels "How big it is" / "How far away it is" and chip BIGGER, OR CLOSER: IT LOOKS BRIGHTER (rendered and opened). Vault: Say the specific thing, 2026-10-02 section | L03, G3T30.py, figures.py |
Judgements
- Summary 258 → 170 words (the Moon line shortened, the lamp-row and day-sky beats cut, the tail cut; every lexicon sentence kept). L04 136 → 147 with the lens beat (the "Where did they come from?" ask and "They were there all along" trimmed).
- Checker: 0 FAIL, 20 WARN; S33/S34 clean for
lens(recognition in L04-q5, recall in PR-14). Page rebuilt.
