James's notes on Topic 32 — triage (2 October 2026)

Source: reviews/james/NOTES_G3T32_2026-10-02.md (six notes: the intro, L01, L02, L03, PR-q12, L05-v1). Topic 32's seven videos were delivered on 1 Oct, so a note has two halves: the TEXT change goes into the modules now; the VIDEO change is an EDIT by id in the R100 one-element form, in handoff/G3T32/videos/FEEDBACK_JAMES_2026-10-02.md — not sent; anything that needs new narration is listed there as a regeneration for James, with the beat written. Nothing is committed.

In plain words

The fish tank has a shell where the snail was. "Non-living" is gone from every page, item, chip and bullet: a thing that is not living is "not alive", plain words, so the topic now coins one term ("living thing") instead of two. The L02 article says plants also take in a gas from the air; the video does not yet, and that is his call. L03's sunflower is in full flower and the flower turns; the flag's verdict says the wind pushed it. And the reason L05 seemed to have no quiz: the page hid it — the quiz is a tab, and the link at the foot of the video went straight on to the next lesson (or, after the last lesson, to the mixed practice). Every lesson in the course has its quiz (L05 has 12 items); the link is fixed in the site builder.

Answering his question under L05-v1 ("is this a general issue across the course?"): no lesson lacks a quiz. The fault was one link on every lesson page, in every topic. It is fixed in build_tools_build_topic_site.py; Topic 32's page is rebuilt here, and every other topic's page picks the fix up when it is next rebuilt.

The table

his note (verbatim)actionwhere
INTRO: "looks great except a snail cant live under water! Just change it to a shell - so that single word change in the audio, and replace the snail image in the visual with a shell"applied in text: intro beat 1 "swims past a shell"; the tank cartoon (fish_tank_cartoon) draws an empty spiral shell on the gravel — figure text, alt and image brief. Video: one combined edit (AUDIO "snail" → "shell" at beat 1 and any other instance; the drawn snail replaced by the shell in every tank frame). One line for him: freshwater snails are common tank animals, so a snail in a tank was not wrong; applied as ruled, because a shell is unambiguous and the sort stays clean. L03's garden snail on a leaf and L05-q9's snail in the yard are on land and stay.G3T32.py intro_script; figures.py; FEEDBACK file (INTRO Edit 1)
L01: "this is great, just for future reference on screen, show numbers as numbers, e.g. 9 cm, 22 cm"applied: the beat-3 screen cue names the chips as numerals (4 cm, 9 cm, 15 cm, 22 cm); the growth chart's chips print "9 cm" instead of "9 centimeters", and its image brief follows. Narration keeps the unit word ("Nine centimeters": the 29 Sep rule for spoken and written prose stands; his new rule is for the screen). Video: a VISUAL edit supplying the four numeral chips, since the delivery note says the chips were not seen on sampled frames. S29 now WARNs once on "4 cm" in the screen cue — his ruling, not a fault. Vault owed: a line under 10 Rules/Every number carries its unit.md — on screen (video chips, drawn figure chips) a number is a numeral with its unit symbol; prose and narration keep the word.G3T32_lessons.py L01 script; figures.py stalk chip + brief; FEEDBACK (L01)
L02: "non-living is a weird word to use - change it to 'not alive' - keep everything else the same."applied everywhere: the L05 title ("Alive or not alive? Ask four questions"), the rule and lexicon ("One no means it is not alive"), forest lines, 7 article lines, 5 figure captions, the sort-table and rule-card chips (NOT ALIVE), 3 L05 script beats and 2 summary beats, the closing bullets, 14 fb/why lines, the practice and bank. S33/S34: "non-living" WAS a coined term (TOPIC["terms"], coined_at, a recognition MCQ and a typed recall in L05, a typed recall in the practice). "Not alive" is plain words, not a term, so the term entry is removed; the two typed recalls are gone (nothing to recall) — the L05 recognition item becomes the lesson's closing alive / not alive pick (fluency), and the practice recall became an MCQ on a fresh scene (a brick; the rock was L05-q10's scene) placed before the two remaining term recalls so term items stay last. L05's quiz is 12 items; the practice stays 12 (PR-q12, his "general note", is still the feeds recall). Video: AUDIO edits on L02 (by ear — the brief told the generator to use "nonliving"), L05 (beats 4, 5, 6) and SUMMARY (beats 9, 10). Vault owed: 10 Rules/Coin no word the everyday word already covers.md, a grades 3–5 line — "not alive", never "non-living"; "living thing" stays the coined term.both modules; figures.py; FEEDBACK (L02 Edit 1, L05, SUMMARY)
L02: "The plant is also moving from side to side later in the video slightly - instead have it stay still."Video: VISUAL edit, beats 5–9, the plant drawn still; the beat-5 screen cue now says so.FEEDBACK (L02 Edit 2); L02 script cue
L02: "plants also take in gases from the air to help make food (CO2 right?) we don't need to say CO2, but we could mention that they take in gases from the air"applied in the article: "The leaves also take in a gas from the air. The plant uses that gas too." after the water line. The rule sentence ("using sunlight and water") is unchanged, so no item moves. Video: new narration → regeneration, James's call, beat written in the FEEDBACK file ("The leaves also take in a gas from the air. The plant uses that gas too.", after beat 6).G3T32_lessons.py L02 article; FEEDBACK (For James)
L03: "instead of the bud, you had a fully formed sunflower, and the flower itself turned"applied in text: headache, article, forest, figure (photo_sunflower_am_pm: a big yellow flower facing left, then right), rule-card text and briefs, the Tav fb lines, the summary's beat 6 and screen cues, the module script. The bud was there because a sunflower in flower stops following the Sun (young heads track; mature heads fix east) — a simplification accepted for clarity, noted in the lesson_type line. Video: VISUAL edit (the flowering plant in every sunflower frame); the spoken "No flower yet, just a bud" is narration → regeneration, James's call (recommended: yes — the flower is the lesson's first example; the summary's "young sunflower's top" follows as an AUDIO edit).L03 in G3T32_lessons.py; figures.py; G3T32.py summary; FEEDBACK (L03 Edit 2, For James)
L03: "you missed a crucial word specifying that the flag was not living because the wind pushed it."applied: script beat 7 "The wind pushed the flag: the flag did not move by itself." (the article already said "The wind pushed it."). Video: AUDIO edit at beat 7 — the verdict sentence spoken with "wind" in it.L03 script; FEEDBACK (L03 Edit 1)
L03 (aside): "most plants don't really move right - so do we need a short lesson dealing with that, cos i'm a bit confused by that atm? Maybe it's nt necessary"Decision for James (below). Nothing changed.—
PR-q12: "just a general note"recorded; no change.—
L05-v1: "i'm noticing that this goes straight onto mixed practice - it should also have its own quiz, before the mixed practice - is this a general issue across the cours?"A build fault, fixed. The quiz exists (12 items) and sits behind the "Quiz" tab; the onward link under the video and the attached question went to the next lesson — after L05, to "Mixed practice →" — so following the links skipped every quiz. Now the onward link from the video or article tab is "Quiz (12 questions) →", and only the quiz tab moves on to the next lesson or the practice. Topic 32 rebuilt; other topics on their next rebuild.build_tools_build_topic_site.py; course_preview/topic32/index.html

Decision for James — do plants need their own "most plants barely move" lesson?
