Olivia's notes on Grade 5 Topic 1 "Why everything falls toward Earth's center" — triage (10 October 2026)
Source: reviews/olivia/G5T01_2026-10-10.md (Olivia Mullins; 20 sections on the intro, the three lessons and their quizzes; 7 marked high). James's rules applied: her TEXT notes on articles and questions are applied at once and recorded (2 Oct; 1 Oct); a VIDEO note is an edit by its Peps id, or a re-render only where the note needs new narration (2 Oct, 10:35); only a major restructure, a scientifically wrong change, or a note that contradicts a rule he gave goes to him as a card; every note is logged here and shown on the tracker. James reviewed this topic's scripts on 9 Oct and ruled on L03's "evidence" line (card 6); his rulings stand and Olivia's notes refine the scenes and items around them.
What happened, in plain words
- Lesson 3 is rebuilt on her physics point and re-rendered. The old scene had a pencil tip off a desk "with nothing pushing it"; in a lesson about what pushes and pulls, that is a thing happening by magic, as she says. Now a named child lets go of a pencil and it falls straight down, the key hangs straight down on its string, and the lesson says what the evidence IS: the fall and the hanging position, never the pencil or the key themselves. James's idea line and his "evidence supports that an idea is true" are unchanged. The attached question and five quiz items follow (someone drops a thing; nothing falls off a shelf by itself; two confusing items cut). The video is re-rendered from the rebuilt brief; the first render is kept as .prev.
- Lesson 2's items lose the "drawing" framing (a ball does not fall in a drawing), the "down" item is rewritten in her shape (toward Earth's center / toward the South Pole / toward the bottom of the map), the near-correct "space" option goes and "Earth PUSHES both balls toward the center" comes in as the trap she suggested, and the attached question gains a drawing of two children on opposite sides of Earth, one looking upside down to us.
- Lesson 1's cup-on-a-tray item is cut (what happens is not what the options say).
- Video edits by id, written and sent (
handoff/G5T01/videos/FEEDBACK_2026-10-10.md): the intro figure's pointing hand; L01's plane now moves and the bag's fall ends on the floor; L02's globe reads as Earth and the first frame shows the phone. Four future notes are saved at her request (the globe's look in future renders, the two-ideas-in-one-video question on L01, a 10–15 s beat from the Australian child's view, and her "which way is down" framing note, which arrived cut off). - One thing goes to James, not applied (Topic 1 Needs-you page, card 2; Grade 5 rulings backlog, row 4): her request to call the force "gravity" and to change "its weight" to "gravity" in L01-q7. It contradicts his 25 September rule (gravity names the happening; the force is Earth's pull, the thing's weight; a student never says gravity is a force). Recommendation to him: keep the rule and say "gravity" more often as the happening's name. Nothing changes until he rules; Olivia gets the reason.
The table — every note, her words verbatim
| note id | her words (verbatim) | kind | our call | status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| INTRO-script | "Okay I'm not sure how important this is but it does look like she's pointing with her middle finger in this video and these are fifth graders. Maybe I would make that high priority or maybe not. I don't know. For the future when we're doing our future notes, can we make the globe look like the real globe? It's fine for now but it does bother me." | video · probably high | VISUAL edit by id (FEEDBACK_2026-10-10.md #1): the pointing hand redrawn; the globe's look saved as a FUTURE NOTE at her own mark ('fine for now') | video edit |
| INTRO-v1 | "This is an interesting framing. Which way down is" | video | note arrived cut off ('Which way down is'); FUTURE NOTE, nothing to apply | noted |
| L01-script | "I'm struggling on this because I've just jumped to fifth grade and I'm not sure what they've learned previously. From what I'm seeing now they are learning two concepts in one video but possibly a lot of this is review. They're learning about the normal force and ideas about gravity. This video, I think, needs some work. I guess you could say it's okay to release it right now but there are just a lot of things that I think are not quite right that will distract the kids. It says the plane is flying but it's not moving. It shows the bag is going to fall a very short distance but then it just shows it falling and falling. I'm not sure they're going to quite understand what's going on. I'm not quite sure what to say for fixes so I might say leave it for now but let's make some notes to come back to this. Also I know I've said this many times but I just want to say it again to make sure. It's really, really important that we are using the correct vocabulary. Now they're in fifth grade. We should be using gravity all the time. I'm not saying never to use Earth's pull. In fact I think it's good to continue to be using it, maybe alternating it or using them both at the same time to remind them of what gravity means (the concept). What's happening here with the vocabulary never being used is they're basically going to go through without having easy use or easy understanding of these key vocab words." | video + vocabulary | VISUAL edits by id (#3 plane moves, #4 the bag's fall ends on the floor); 'two concepts in one video' saved as a FUTURE NOTE at her request; 'use gravity all the time' NOT applied: contradicts James's 25 Sep rule → card 2 on the Topic 1 Needs-you page and row 4 of the Grade 5 rulings backlog | video edit · card |
| L01-q7 | "This is not correct. The Earth's pull on the book is called gravity. Can you please change its weight to gravity?" | quiz | NOT applied: 'its weight → gravity' contradicts James's rule (the force is Earth's pull, the thing's weight; gravity names the happening) → card 2 for James | open (card) |
| L01-q9 | "Remove this.I'm going to put this in the category of not things that would happen in real life. If someone pulls the tray away, the cup... Actually now I'm not even sure what the correct answer is because it's going to stay on the tray but the tray is going to move so it's not going to to stay in the same place or fall to the floor yet. Just delete this. High priority." | quiz · high | applied: item deleted (the cup on the tray; what happens is not what the options say); L01 quiz 9 items | applied |
| L02-script | "I'm not sure if this is going to be viewed as high priority but I kind of think it's high priority. The globe does not look anything like a real globe. I really think it should. We are a science class so I feel like we should be getting these details at least close and it just looks nothing like it. Also if you're changing the video, I would try to make it a little more obvious that in the first frame the girl's on a phone. I know it says she's on the phone but visually it kind of looks like she's behind a door, or it would be easy to not understand that. I'd say that's medium priority but concept-wise I really like this video. I think it's very clever. For the future I would add 10 or 15 seconds showing that, from the girl in Australia's perspective, she's right-side up, if you're able to do that graphically. Let's do that for the future. I hope that you are AI-keeping note somewhere for future things." | video · high / medium | VISUAL edits by id (#6 the globe drawn as Earth, #7 the phone visible in the first frame); the 10–15 s Australian-view beat saved as a FUTURE NOTE (new narration) | video edit |
| L02-v1 | "I like this and I'm sorry. I know I'm not supposed to be doing low priority but I think it would be really nice with an image that shows the boy upside down or like it looks upside down to us." | attached question · low | applied: code-drawn figure added (two children on Earth at opposite points, one looking upside down to us, both feet on the ground); question text unchanged | applied |
| L02-q2 | "Okay first of all, the globe. These globes are killing me. The globes need to be fixed. Secondly , remove the "drawing" idea of these questions. It's just confusing because a ball is not falling in a drawing. Just keep it as Earth and as real life." | quiz · high | applied: 'drawing' framing dropped (real Earth, a real ball); every L02 globe figure redrawn as Earth (land shapes) | applied |
| L02-q3 | "I think the correct answer is that Earth pulls both balls toward the same point. I would remove answer 1 because I feel like it's almost correct. If you think of space as beyond Earth, yes, but if you think of spaces on Earth, then it's correct, which is what I thought maybe the AI meant. Because sometimes AI says things weirdly so remove that answer. The air one's fine. For the correct answer reward it to: Earth pulls both balls toward the center of the Earth or towards Earth's center. For another answer to replace a deleted one, it can be: Earth pushs both balls towards the center of the Earth. That's actually, I think, a good trick. it will make them think about it." | quiz | applied: the near-correct 'space' option removed; key 'Earth pulls both balls toward Earth's center'; new trap 'Earth pushes both balls toward Earth's center' (her suggestion) | applied |
| L02-q6 | "This is nice. I might say, "Why does rain fall down and not up?" for another question, if you need another one, because gravity pulls it down. Just a suggestion, low priority." | quiz · low | applied: her rain item added as L02-07 ('Why does rain fall down?', keyed on Earth's pull toward its center; 'and not up' dropped under James's no-negative-stems rule) | applied |
| L02-q7 | "Remove this drawing thing because in the drawing they can't be dropped. It's not really sensical." | quiz | applied: 'drawing' framing dropped | applied |
| L02-q8 | "I don't think they've been taught this so unless they were taught it and it's a review question, I would remove it." | quiz | applied: item removed (why the ground looks flat: article-only, not in the video, no Grade 3/4 recall line) | applied |
| L02-q9 | "This is not a good question because "down" means these things in different contexts and the context is not properly defined. This is high priority. I would reward this as follows: Which sentence is correct, or which sentence describes what we mean when we say, "Gravity pulls things down"? - Gravity pulls things towards the center of the Earth. - Gravity pulls things towards the South Pole. - Gravity pulls things towards the bottom of the map. Alternatively you could say, "What does 'down' mean when we use it in the following sentence: 'Gravity pulls things down'?" and then you could have the same answers. Either of those would work. What's there now does not work." | quiz · high | applied in her shape: 'What does down mean in the sentence Earth pulls things down?' → toward Earth's center (key) / toward the South Pole / toward the bottom of the map / one more wrong; 'Earth pulls' for her 'Gravity pulls' (James's rule) | applied |
| L03-script | "High priority. This video needs to be redone. I really strongly feel we cannot just have magical things happen in these videos. Why is the pencil suddenly tipping? This is about forces and so we're saying nothing pushed the pencil. Well then how did it move? Maybe the rain is supposed to be shaking it but that's not clear to me. Instead just have someone drop something and it falls straight down, because if something's coming off a desk, it's not going to fall straight down. It's going to fall at an angle because of the momentum of it rolling first. Again I think this is really important and should be redone. Something that seems smaller but I actually think is also really important and high priority: the pencil is not evidence and the key is not evidence. Those are just objects. It's their movement, or, in the case of the key, their position, that's evidence. I think this is important: have someone drop the pencil and then say, "The fact that the pencil falls straight to the ground is evidence that something is pulling it and scientists have determined that that something is the Earth." The fact that the key is hanging down from the string and not up from the string is evidence. Scientists have found other evidence to show that that pull comes from the Earth and we call it gravity. Again do not say the key is evidence. Do not say the pencil is evidence. Say, "What's the fact of their movement or their position or"" | video · high | applied as a REWRITE and RE-RENDER (FEEDBACK #9): Beatriz lets go of the pencil and it falls straight down; the key hangs straight down; the FALL and the hanging POSITION are the evidence, never the object; James's idea line and 'supports that an idea is true' unchanged; rule sentence now 'When a thing falls straight toward the ground with nothing pushing it, its fall is evidence…' (SUMMARY beat 4 audio edit by id, #10) | re-render |
| L03-v1 | "remove this, something has to happen to get it off the table. Say " Someone hold an eraser in their hand. They let go of the eraser and it falls straight down. Which idea does this support?"" | attached question | applied: 'A boy holds an eraser in his hand. He lets go, and it falls straight down. Which idea does this support?' | applied |
| L03-q1 | "reword "does the snow falling down give evidence that the earth pulls things down."" | quiz | applied: 'Does the snow falling down give evidence that Earth pulls things down?' shape | applied |
| L03-q2 | "this is confusing I would remove it" | quiz | applied: removed (confusing) | applied |
| L03-q3 | "I think this is a little confusing since we've been saying "gravity always pulls on object." so I think this is a little nuanced, I'd remove this question." | quiz | applied: removed (nuanced against 'Earth always pulls') | applied |
| L03-q5 | "something has to push it to make it fall off the shelf, have someone drop something" | quiz | applied: someone drops the thing; nothing falls off a shelf by itself | applied |
| L03-q6 | "look at the last question" | quiz | applied: same fix as q5 | applied |

Video edits landed (10 Oct, by 12:40)
All five placed by the pipeline with the first renders kept as .prev: INTRO (the pointing hand, index finger extended), L01 (the plane moves; the bag makes one short drop to the floor), L02 (the globe drawn as Earth; the phone in the first frame), SUMMARY (beat 4's rule line now names the fall as the evidence), L03 (re-rendered on the new script: Beatriz lets go of the pencil; the fall and the key's hanging position are the evidence; James's evidence sentence verbatim). The pages and the live videos agree again; the table below is history.
