The lessons and their rules

LessonAtomRule sentence
L01 How people get electricity from the windEAR4-083The wind pushes the blades of a wind turbine round. The turning blades turn a machine that makes electricity. A thing in nature people get energy from: an energy resource.
L02 How people get electricity from moving waterEAR4-084Moving water pushes the blades of a wheel inside a dam round. The turning wheel turns a machine that makes electricity. The river keeps flowing, so nature keeps giving it.
L03 How people get electricity from sunlightEAR4-085Sunlight falls on a solar panel, and the panel makes electricity. The electricity carries energy along wires into the house. At night no sunlight falls on the panel, so it makes none.
L04 How people get energy from plants: wood to burn and food to eatEAR4-086Plants are an energy resource. Wood burns, and its heat carries energy to the room. Food from a plant has energy; it moves to your body when you eat it.

The intro script (120 words, about 60 s)

Here's Miss Okoro's class on a stormy afternoon. The lights go out. For one minute the room is dark, and then the lights come back on. Maddox asks where the electricity comes from. Miss Okoro says some of it comes from the wind, some from a river, some from sunlight, and some from plants. But how can moving air, or a river, or sunlight, or a log, end up as light in a classroom lamp? To find out, we will look at the tall towers with blades on a hill, a wall across a river, dark panels on a roof, and a log burning in a stove. Okay, so are you ready to find out where the electricity comes from?

The question types (from TYPES_G4T27.md)

  1. Type 1 (easy · MCQ, the what-pushes set · 083, 084): what pushes the blades (or the dam's wheel) round; v2: PP-02 asks which thing is MISSING when the blades hang still (the moving air) — the moving air / the electricity in the wires / the still air / the sunlight; for the dam: the moving water in the pipe / the still lake / the wall / the wind
  2. Type 2 (easy · MCQ · 083, 084): what the turning blades (or wheel) turn; v2: PP-04 asks WHERE inside the turbine the electricity is made (in the machine at the top) — a machine that makes electricity / a pump that makes wind / a lamp inside the tower / a solar panel
  3. Type 3 (easy · MCQ · 083, 084, 085): what carries the energy on from the machine or the panel — electricity, along wires / the wind, through the air / light, through the air / heat, through the ground
  4. Type 4 (easy · MCQ, the thing-from-its-job set · 083, 084, 085): which thing has blades the wind pushes; which holds a river back; which makes electricity when sunlight falls on it — a wind turbine / a dam / a solar panel / a water wheel
  5. Type 5 (easy · MCQ · 083, 084): which thing is the energy resource; where the electricity is made — one thing from nature and three things people make
  6. Type 6 (easy, medium · MCQ, the how-much set · 083, 084, 085): how much electricity on a still day, with the pipe shut, at night, in fog; at which times a turbine can make electricity — none / a little / the same as usual / more than usual (ordered); any time the wind blows / only in daylight / …
  7. Type 7 (easy, medium · MCQ, drawn source card · 083, 084, 085, 086): what goes in the blank box or on the blank chip — four things, or four chip words (FOOD / HEAT / LIGHT / ELECTRICITY on the hay card — FOOD is Grade 4's one word on an eater arrow, v2)
  8. Type 8 (medium · MCQ · 083, 084, 085): the correct reason a still turbine makes none; what stops a dam; where in the dam the water pushes; why noon beats sunset — four single statements
  9. Type 9 (medium · MCQ · 084, 085): which thing works the same way as a mill wheel; which keeps the lake full; which place gets the most from a panel — four things / four places
  10. Type 10 (medium · MCQ, drawn table · 085): at which logged time the panel made no electricity — the four times in the log
  11. Type 11 (easy, medium · MCQ · 086): what carries energy from burning logs; which thing is the receiver; what pushes the wheel in a big building that burns plants to make electricity (never named — Topic 28 coins "power plant"); which is a way people get energy from plants — four single answers
  12. Type 12 (hard · typed · 084, 085, 086): the name of the wall; what must fall on the panel; what carries the energy from the logs; the stuff from the trees that burns — dam / sunlight / heat / wood, each with article, plural and child spellings
  13. Type 13 (hard · MCQ · 085, 086): a named child's claim is wrong: what is the correct reason (the panel stores sunlight; a still log has no energy; the stove's metal makes the heat) — four single-statement reasons
  14. Type 14 (hard · MCQ · 085, 086): two ideas chained: cold clear day against hot cloudy day; the wood pile refilled from planted trees; a snack traced to plants then into the body — four statements
  15. Type 15 (hard · multi-select · 086): the TWO ways people get energy from plants — burning wood for its heat / eating food that comes from plants / turning leaves in the wind / shining sunlight on a plant

Four lessons for four atoms, one energy source each, in Miss Okoro's class with Maddox, Ayesha and Malia.

Maddox sees a row of tall white towers from the car, so L01 teaches that the wind pushes the blades round, the turning blades turn a machine that makes electricity, and the electricity carries the energy along wires (the wall is one stop on the wire).

Ayesha stands on top of a dam and asks how a wall of concrete can make electricity, so L02 shows the water falling through a pipe onto a wheel; the still lake and the wall make nothing.

Malia asks how panels that never move can make electricity, so L03 teaches that sunlight falling on a solar panel makes it (none at night, a little under cloud, light not warmth).

Then the capstone: Malia says a log cannot be an energy resource because it does not move and is not hot, and L04 answers that everything has some energy, a burning log's heat carries energy to the room, and food's energy moves to the eater.

"Renewable" is never said; each lesson ends "nature keeps giving it", and Topic 29 coins the word.

Every key agreed by three cold readers over two bundles; the guidance-and-accuracy review, the figure review and Reader C's full re-read are applied. Pictures are placeholders until you answer.

1. Is "energy resource" the right word to coin here, in Topic 27?

The register names the four atoms "the wind / moving water / sunlight / plants as an energy resource", and the four lessons need one word for what the four have in common.

Built: coined at the end of L01 as "A thing in nature that people get energy from is called an energy resource", carried by one line per lesson and one item per quiz, and recalled by MCQ (a two-word term is never typed).

Recommendation: coin it here.

Coin it here / leave it to Topic 29

2. Is one plain line enough for "the panel needs the light, not the warmth"?

Children run solar panels together with things that warm in the Sun, but the misconception catalogue has no row for it, and the rule says do not invent a belief to test.

Built: one L03 line ("A cold panel in bright winter sun makes plenty of electricity."), one quiz item on what the panel needs, and one hard bank item (a cold clear winter day against a hot cloudy summer day).

Recommendation: keep it plain.

Keep it plain / add a claim item

3. Do the three long articles stand as one lesson each?

L01 runs to 356 words, L02 to 393 and L04 to 381; the line for a Grade 4 article is about 300.

Each has a subtitle or a figure every four idea lines or fewer, and each extra section feeds an item (the wire back to the tower; the old mill; the shut pipe; the reservoir; the building that burns wood chips).

Recommendation: keep them.

Keep them / split L02 or L04 into two lessons

Rulings made across topics while you were away (yours to reverse)

4. Does "energy resource" stay the course's word, and "energy source" go from Topics 28 and 29?

Topic 27 coined "energy resource"; Topic 29 said "energy source" 64 times and Topic 28 three times. A child would meet two names for one thing.

The register's name is "energy resource", so the coordinator ruled it for all three topics; the Topic 28 and 29 fix passes carry their halves.

Recommendation: keep "energy resource".

Keep "energy resource" / switch all three topics to "energy source"

5. Does Topic 27 describe the building that burns wood chips without naming it?

Topic 28 coins "power plant" (the US word), and Topic 27 comes first; Topic 27 had said "power station" in a heading, a line and two items.

Ruled: Topic 27 says "a big building that burns wood chips and corn stalks to make electricity"; Topic 29's fix pass says "power plant".

Recommendation: keep the description.

Keep the description / coin "power plant" here and let Topic 28 recap it

6. Does FOOD stay as the word on the arrow from food to the eater?

Both blind readers picked the hay-and-cow item's answer by shape: the arrow said ENERGY, the only word that was not a carrier.

Ruled: the arrow says FOOD, the word Topic 34 prints on its eater arrows, and L04 says why in one line ("No wire, no light and no heat carries this energy. The food itself carries it, so the card's arrow says FOOD.").

Recommendation: keep FOOD.

Keep FOOD / the bare word ENERGY / no word on the eater arrow

7. Do the item cards keep their phone layout?

The figure review measured the card text at 6 px on a phone and found the carrier chip sitting on a box corner on every card.

v2 rebuilt the one card drawer: the frame shrank from 560 to 424 units and the text grew to 17, so a child on a 360 px phone reads 13 px letters; the chips sit above the boxes; every item-card box is the same pale grey, so no tint whispers the answer; where the chip is the thing asked, its arrow is grey. Topics 34 and 35 import a compact form of the same drawer.

Recommendation: keep the layout.

Keep the layout / another layout (say which)

Applied without asking

Every claim item is bare yes / no with the correction in the why, and every bank claim asks for the correct reason; every coined word has a recognition item before any recall, and "dam" (three letters) is the one typed term; every attached question stands alone; units are words in prose; every sentence a student reads has a subject and a verb; every bank item maps to one atom; "a machine that makes electricity" stands for the generator, named once per lesson as a story for later grades. Reader C's notes were applied at once: the still brick's stem asks "any energy at all" and its "no" feedback quotes the rule; Maggie is now Ayesha (Maddox, Maggie and Malia read as one child); PP-49's key lost its clause; PP-09's four options are one shape; PP-19's street lamp became the warm air; L02-11 and L04-06 each have a distractor with "and"; PP-46 lost its comma; two keys moved so no four in a row share a letter; L04-10 names all three things in its stem; "light" and "wood chips" are confirmed on the typed items; and "source card" is now said under each lesson's card.

After you answer

Nothing on the page changes if you keep all seven. Leaving "energy resource" to Topic 29 is one lexicon line, four article lines and four items here, and the same word back into Topics 28 and 29; a claim item on warmth is one bank item; a split is one more lesson with its own video; "energy source" everywhere is three topics' fix passes; coining "power plant" here is one heading, one line and two items; the bare ENERGY chip is one drawing, one line and one item; another card layout is one drawer and fourteen item cards. Either way the picture pass starts on the twelve placeholders, and your notes on the scripts send the six-video batch.

What the reviews found, and what changed

The blind read (two readers, 2 October) and the re-read (Reader C)

Two readers answered 119 items cold and agreed every key. Their flags, all applied in v2: nine keys spottable as the only full causal sentence beside short distractors (every key now one clause, every distractor its shape; the key-tell checker reads 0 of 112); the hay-and-cow card's ENERGY chip picked by shape (now FOOD, with the convention said in L04); a houseboat stem over a card whose last box said "the cabin" (re-carded); a typed item whose stem named "bark and chips" so that "bark" was as right as "wood" (the stem now names pieces cut from tree trunks); a solar card whose LIGHT chip left only "the Sun" (re-asked with light-givers as distractors and retagged easy); two bank items that were quiz items with the nouns changed (re-scened); "dam" typed before two stems printed it (the typed item is now last); and wider accept lists ("light", "the Sun's light", "a dam", "dam wall", "heat energy").

Reader C then read the whole v2 bundle, 119 items, and agreed every key. One hedge, fixed in v3: the still brick (does it have any energy?) could be argued either way by a child who had learnt "a cold log still has energy to give"; the key stays yes, the course's rule, and the stem now asks "any energy at all". Reader C's shape notes, all applied: PP-49's key carried a clause the distractors lacked; PP-09's key alone said "any time"; PP-19 offered a street lamp, a real light source; two keys were the only option with "and"; one key the only option with a comma; four keys in a row read C; one stem said "dry cobs" where the option said "corn cobs". Reader C also read Maddox, Maggie and Malia as one child (Maggie is now Ayesha), confirmed the chip words mean the same on every card and that no card description names the box or chip it asks for, and gave three correct answers in other words for each of the six typed items, all of which pass.

The guidance, questions and accuracy review (2 October)

The science is right and the chain is taught cleanly four times, the reviewer said. The two findings that mattered crossed topics: Topic 27 coined "energy resource" while Topics 28 and 29 said "energy source", and Topic 27 said "power station" while Topic 28 coins "power plant" (Questions 4 and 5 above). Inside the topic, all applied in v2: the L04 video never spoke "Everything has some energy" or the steam line its quiz keys on (both are in the script now, at 149 words); sixteen real key tells (one-clause keys, distractors in the key's shape); two within-bank twins (re-written); an absolute ("Still water pushes nothing") and two false lines about the wind and a panel (corrected); the attached-question key string and the L01 two-option string (re-spread); the claim string with five No in six (one claim is now true: the wind has energy because it is moving air); three imperatives in L04 ("Burn it", "Cut a tree", "Pick the corn", now "When it burns…"); a heater and a fan that could run on wood-chip electricity (now a boy in the sunshine); the intro pointing at L01's highway (now "tall towers with blades on a hill"); and the reservoir recalled by an item only (one L02 line added). Left as built: "pushes nothing round", "nature keeps giving" wood, "a story for later grades" once per lesson, PP-27's silly distractor.

The figure review (2 October)

Clean three-box cards with a blue PUSH arrow and an orange ELECTRICITY arrow, one shape through the topic, the reviewer said; then that the chip sat on a box corner on every card and that on a phone the cards were unreadable (6 px). Seven fixes, all made in v2: the chip above the boxes; the card frame 560 to 424 units and the text 12 to 17 (13 px on a 360 px phone; the desktop card capped at 572 px); every item-card box pale grey (the first-box tint had cued the wind on three cards); the solar card re-asked so its LIGHT chip is data; the houseboat card's "the cabin" renamed; a grey arrow where the chip is the ask (an orange arrow had ruled out "a push" before the child read); the dam redrawn (the pipe slopes from the lake, the wheel sits above the river, the house stands on its own ground). Nine unplaced figures deleted, the four rule cards kept for the videos and dropped from the articles (the rule block carries the words), the summary's four-card strip kept as the video's asset. All 31 code-drawn figures were re-rendered at 900 and 324 px with no text overlap and nothing out of frame, and every page route was screenshotted at 1200 and 360 px.

Grade 4 Topic 27 — Energy from wind, water, sunlight and plants — build record (v1, 2 October 2026)

What this is, in plain words

Four short lessons, one per energy source, each the same story told once more: something in nature pushes or shines, a machine makes electricity (or a log burns), and a carrier takes the energy on to the receiver. Maddox sees the row of tall white towers from the car and asks how moving air can end up as electricity in a lamp (L01: the wind pushes the blades round, the turning blades turn a machine that makes electricity, electricity carries the energy along wires — and the wall is only a stop on the wire, not the maker). Maggie stands on top of a dam and asks how a wall of concrete can make electricity (L02: it cannot; water from the high lake falls through a pipe and pushes a wheel round, the wheel turns the machine; shut the pipe and the still wheel makes nothing). Malia asks how panels that never move can make electricity (L03: sunlight falls on them and they make electricity; at night none, under cloud a little; the panel needs light, not warmth). Then the capstone: Miss Okoro says the logs in the stove and the corn bread are energy resources too, and Malia says a log cannot be — it does not move, it is not hot (L04: everything has some energy; the burning log's heat carries energy to the room; food from a plant has energy that moves to your body when you eat it). Every lesson ends on the same note in plain words — the wind blows again, the river keeps flowing, the Sun rises, new plants grow, so nature keeps giving it — and never says "renewable", which Topic 29 coins.

The key strings

The example sequences, written out

L01 (one chain, examples only; the still day is the near miss): the wind pushes on the three long blades, so the blades turn · the turning blades turn a machine inside the top of the tower, and the machine makes electricity · electricity carries energy along wires to whatever is plugged in; the wall is only one stop along the wire · on a still day no moving air pushes the blades, so the blades stay still, and the tower makes no electricity · the names: wind turbine; energy resource. Rule: The wind pushes the blades of a wind turbine round, and the turning blades turn a machine that makes electricity. A thing in nature that people get energy from is called an energy resource.

L02: the river pushed the mill's wooden wheel round · water from the high lake falls through a big pipe inside the wall; the falling water pushes on the blades of a wheel, so the wheel turns · the turning wheel turns a machine that makes electricity · the pipe shut: no water moves past the wheel, so the wheel stays still; the still lake pushes nothing round; the wall makes no electricity · the name: dam · rain, streams, the river keep the lake full. Rule: Moving water pushes the blades of a wheel inside a dam round, and the turning wheel turns a machine that makes electricity. The river keeps flowing, so nature keeps giving this energy resource.

L03: the Sun's light carries energy to whatever it falls on · sunlight falls on the panel; the panel is a machine that makes electricity when light falls on it; nothing inside it turns · the electricity carries energy along a wire into the house · night: none; cloud: a little; the table · the cold winter panel: light, not warmth · the name: solar panel. Rule: When sunlight falls on a solar panel, the panel makes electricity, and the electricity carries energy along wires into the house. At night no sunlight falls on the panel, so the panel makes no electricity.

L04: a plant makes its own food, using sunlight; a tree grows using sunlight, and so does corn · the log burns, and its heat carries energy to the room · everything has some energy, in different types; a cold log still has energy to give · the corn bread has energy; when Maggie eats it, that energy moves from the food to her body (giver, receiver) · a power station burns wood chips and corn stalks; the heat boils water, and the steam pushes a wheel round · new trees, new corn. Rule: Plants are an energy resource. Wood from a tree burns, and its heat carries energy to the room. Food from a plant has energy, and that energy moves to your body when you eat it.

The rules applied

Rule (vault note)Where it bites here
Light, sound and electricity carry energy; they are not forms of itevery line: "the electricity carries energy along wires", "the Sun's light carries energy", "its heat carries energy to the room"; never "solar energy", "wind energy", "heat energy"
Energy is had or carried, never at work"the wind has energy to give", "food from a plant has energy", "that energy moves from the food to her body"; never "the wind makes electricity", "food gives you energy"
Explain, then label; coin as "when X, we call it Y""A tall tower with long blades that the wind turns, to make electricity, is called a wind turbine"; "A thick wall built across a river to hold the water back is called a dam"; "A flat panel that makes electricity when sunlight falls on it is called a solar panel"; "A thing in nature that people get energy from is called an energy resource" — each after its cases
A coined term is used from then on, with a one-line recap on first reuseL02–L04 say "energy resource" with no scaffold; "wind turbine" and "solar panel" carry the summary and the bank; "giver / receiver" recapped in one line in L04
Lesson text states the fact, never the topic that taught it"Moving air or moving water pushes on the blades of a wheel, so the wheel turns." / "A plant does not eat: it makes its own food, using sunlight." — no "in Topic 12 you saw"
Name the simplification you made"What happens inside that machine is a story for later grades." (L01, L02); "What happens inside the panel is a story for later grades." (L03) — one sentence, taught words
Coin no word the everyday word already coversno "generator", no "hydroelectric", no "photovoltaic", no "turbine" for the steam wheel ("a wheel")
A headache scene could really happen therea car passing a wind farm; a family on a dam's walkway; a neighbor's solar roof; a class in a cabin with a wood stove; the intro's storm power cut — no sign or notice invented
A question in an article is answered in the next sentence, verdict firstL02: "How can a wall of concrete make electricity?" → the subtitle's first line "The wall does not make the electricity" is the forest's; the article's "Remember the water wheel" opens the answer; L04's closing "So Malia was not right"
Every sentence a student reads has a subject and a verb (S38)0 fragments after "Which one?" became "Which natural resource did it start as?"
Connectives carry cause; a turn opens with But"The wind pushes on the three long blades, so the blades turn"; "A cold log does not move, and it is not hot. But it still has energy to give."
No figurative verb a young reader takes literallythe wind "pushes the blades round", the water "falls through a pipe", heat "carries energy"; never "harnesses", "captures", "lifts", "feeds the grid"
Say the specific thing; pronouns point at one named thing"the turning blades", "the still water in the lake", "the burning log" repeated as nouns; "its heat" after "the burning log is hot"
Units as words in prose; numerals on screen"forty years", "ten o'clock at night", "nine o'clock"; the sky log prints "7 in the morning", "10 at night"
Biggest / smallest for size only (S39)0 hits; amounts are "the most electricity", "more", "less", "plenty", "a little", "none"
A quantitative stem states its numbers, never many or fewthe how-much items use the lesson's own ordered words (none / a little / the same / more), not counts, because the topic measures nothing — recorded as the one place words stand for amounts
Grade-level words (S36)5 words listed and answered below; "ridge" → "hill", "flicker" → cut, "paddles" → "blades", "crackles" → "makes a sound", "hiker" → "a girl walking in the hills", "socket" cut from stems
An attached question stands alone (S27)each attached stem names its own scene (a Kansas hill; a Washington dam; an Arizona shed; a camp stove; a Wyoming hill; a Texas barn at midnight; a bowl of rice)
Recognition before recall; typed only where the word is spellable (S33 / S34 / S35)"dam" offered in L02-q5 and PR-8 before L02-q6 and PR-14 type it; the three two-word terms in RECALL_BY_MCQ; S30 clean on six typed items (keys inside the lexicon's sentences; article-less, article and plural forms; child spellings)
A quiz climbs recognise → apply → produce (S32)recalls → fluency → term → claims → apply → drawn card → transfer → term in L01–L03; recalls → what → claim → why → apply → card → transfer in L04
An option never bundles a verdict with its reasonevery quiz and practice claim is bare yes / no with the correction in the why; every bank claim is "X is wrong … What is the correct reason?" with four single-statement reasons
A misconception item tests a documented misconception the lesson addressedeach claim's source names the catalogue row or the literature AND the lesson line; the solar-warmth muddle, with no source, is tested plainly (Question 2)
Fresh instances (S10; the bank-freshness grep)0 S10 warnings after "river" and "thick" were declared working words and "concrete" left the typed stem; the scene-noun grep below
A real thing survives the claim made about itwind turbines in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Idaho, New Hampshire, Colorado (all have wind farms); dams making electricity in Tennessee, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Kentucky, Arkansas, Nebraska, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, South Dakota (all have hydroelectric dams); plant-burning power stations in Georgia and Florida (both have biomass plants); corn in Iowa; a paper mill in Alabama burning bark (standard practice) — each checked
One depiction per thing, reused everywhereone source-card drawer for every hand-over (teaching, headache, summary strip and item forms); Topic 12's arrow, box and motion arc imported; Topic 18's table, rule card and placeholders imported; the turbine, the dam and the panel each one drawer with day / still / headache forms; the dam's paddle wheel registered as a new thing (never Topic 12's spoon wheel)
Code draws what must be exact; David's pack renders what must look real39 SVG figures (cards, turbine, dam, panel, stove, table, rule cards); 8 photo placeholders (turbines, a tower's foot, a dam, a mill wheel, a solar roof, a wood fire, a corn field, a wood-chip pile); 4 cartoon placeholders (the four scenes); no person or hand drawn as a glyph
A figure passes on the built page; every inline id uniquethe module writes no ids (check_svg_ids.py: 51 figures, 0 ids, PASS); all four article routes and the L01 quiz route screenshotted at 800 px and read — every figure present, nothing empty, nothing out of frame after the fixes below
Lettered stems and drawings from one list; order keys the stem's waynot used: no lettered part and no order item in this topic (the cards name their boxes in words)
An item figure's blind text is data, never the answerevery card's blind text lists its boxes and arrow chips left to right with "?" at the blank; the sky log lists its rows; the grep below
Summary opens "Here's everything we found out about …" and recaps points, not examplesthe opener, then the eight lexicon sentences in four beats with "First / Next / Then / And last", one closing "nature keeps giving all four", 169 words; four summary bullets
A summary brief's rule beats are chips, not actionsevery summary screen is "the … card highlights; chip …"
Closing bullets are a few words eachthe two 13-word bullets check_brief.py flagged were cut to 11 and 10 words

Misconceptions confronted, by name

Belief (source)Where the lesson meets itThe item
Electricity is made in the wall socket, or comes through the air (catalogue ENE-07: Osborne 1983; Shipstone 1984)L01: "A lamp's wire runs to the wall, and from the wall the wire runs on, all the way back to the tower. The electricity is not made in the wall. The wall is only one stop along the wire."; the thick-wire photoL01-q7 (Maddox, no); PR-9 (Malia, no); PP-08 (where the electricity is made)
The wind IS energy; energy is named as its source (Watts 1983; Solomon 1983)L01: "The wind is moving air. Moving air is a moving thing, so it has kinetic energy." (Topic 12's sentence)L01-q9 (Maggie, no)
Light, sound and electricity are kinds of energy (catalogue ENE-06; James's ruling)avoided by wording everywhere: "carries energy", never "solar / wind / heat energy"— (no item; the rule bars the option as a key)
The dam's wall, or the still lake, makes the electricity (the headache's own belief; Maggie's question)L02: "The still water in the lake pushes nothing round"; "So the concrete wall makes no electricity. The wall only holds the lake high, so that the water can fall."L02-q7 (Maggie, no); PP-28 (where the water pushes); PP-14 (the resource is the moving water)
The Sun gives light and warmth but not "energy" (Solomon 1983; Trumper 1993)L03: "The Sun does not only give us light. Its light carries energy." (Topic 4's sentence)L03-q4 (Maddox, no)
A solar panel works from the Sun's warmth; it stores sunlight for the night (no catalogue row; common in energy-resource teaching)L03: "The panel needs the light, not the warmth. A cold panel in bright winter sun makes plenty of electricity."; "At night no sunlight falls on the panel, so the panel makes no electricity."L03-q9 (what the panel needs, plain); PP-43 (winter against summer); PP-42 (Malia's storing claim, correct reason)
A still, cold thing has no energy — wood and food are not "energy" (catalogue ENE-02: Watts 1983 'obvious activity'; Driver et al. 1994)L04: "Everything has some energy, in different types."; "A cold log does not move, and it is not hot. But it still has energy to give."; Malia's headache claim answered in the closing returnL04-q5 (Maggie, TRUE claim, yes); PP-46 (Maddox's log, correct reason)
The stove (the receiver) makes the heat (the giver taken for the receiver; Topic 4's giver / receiver line)L04: "The log burns, and the burning log is hot. Its heat carries energy to the room."PP-47 (Maggie's stove, correct reason)
Energy is "used up" (catalogue ENE-03)avoided by wording: "nature keeps giving it", "the moving water has not run out" said only of the SOURCE, never of energy—

Bank freshness, re-performed

Scene nouns of every lesson, quiz, attached and summary item (68: car, highway, dad, Texas, walkway, Tennessee, mom, concrete, front steps, neighbor, cabin, corn bread, stove, Kansas, Georgia, fan, pinwheel, Oklahoma, Iowa, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, ferry, island, reservoir, faucet, spoon, Idaho, Oregon, Kentucky, camp, stream, Colorado, slide, school roof, Utah, barn, Ohio, Florida, houseboat, Nevada, garden lamp, sunflower, brick, Vermont, oatmeal, firewood, wood chips, Maine, corn cobs, apple, shirt, oak, heater, ranch, South Dakota, bus stop, baker, Michigan, Alaska, storm, classroom, Washington, Arizona, shed, soup, rice, midnight) grepped against the bank and the practice. Hits that were SCENE reuse with a noun changed, and what was done: a turbine "beside a highway in Illinois" (L01's highway) → "at the edge of a town"; "a wind turbine in Texas, still all morning" (L01-q8's Nebraska still morning) → limp flags at a Texas wind farm all afternoon; "a farm in Iowa" (L01-q4's Iowa tower) → Indiana; "a wind turbine in Oklahoma" (L01-q3) → Ohio; "a lake in Montana" (L02-q8's Montana pipe) → North Carolina; "the pipe inside a dam in Oregon" (L02-q4) → Virginia; "a school roof in Arizona" (L03-q2's school roof) → a library roof in Oklahoma; "thick cloud over a house in Washington" (L03-q6's Ohio cloud) → thick fog; "the barn's lights" card (L03-q5's barn) → the garage's lights; "a power station in Florida burns wood chips" (L04-q7's Georgia wood chips) → corn stalks and straw; "a power station in Georgia burns chips" (typed wood) → a paper mill in Alabama burning bark and chips; "a stove in a cabin in Minnesota" (L04's cabin stove) → the stove of a bakery; "a solar panel on a cabin in Vermont" → a road sign; the practice's "wind turbines in Kansas" (the L01 attached) → North Dakota; "a tower in Oklahoma" → Missouri; "a river in Idaho" (L02-q3) → Pennsylvania; "a cabin roof in Alaska" → a trailer roof. Hits that remain are content, not scenes: concrete (the distractor "the concrete wall"), stove ×14 (the device for burning wood — the thing itself, as Topic 22's shaking table; the bank's stoves are a bakery's, a claim's and a card's, never the cabin), fan (the option "turning on a fan"), wood chips (the lexicon's own power-station line in a why), state names on different scene kinds (Colorado hill vs Colorado camp stream; Nebraska dam vs Nebraska still morning; Michigan roof vs Michigan baker). No bank item now reuses a taught scene with a noun changed.

Blind-text grep

grep -h '^\[Drawing:' grade4/topic27_build/blind/2026-10-02/BLIND_BUNDLE_G4T27.md | grep -iE 'energy|carries|electricity|keeps giving' → 7 hits, each explained: every hit is the word ELECTRICITY as the second arrow's chip on a card whose BLANK is a box or the first chip (the ferry card: "?" box, chips PUSH; ELECTRICITY — the answer is the wind turbine; the town card and the ranch / island cards: "?" first box — the answer is moving water / the moving air; the city card: "?" middle box — the wheel inside the dam; the houseboat card: chips "?; ELECTRICITY" — the answer is LIGHT; the garage card: "?" first box — the Sun). In none of the seven is ELECTRICITY the thing asked for; it is the drawn data a reader needs to place the card in its chain. The factory card, whose blank IS the electricity chip, prints "arrows left to right: PUSH; ?" — 0 hits. No blind line carries "carries", "energy" or "keeps giving". The twelve drawing lines are listed in the bundle; "wind turbine", "the wheel inside the dam" and "the solar panel" appear only where they are drawn boxes, never where they are the blank.

Figures (author self-check on the renders; the non-author review-figures pass is owed)

Rendered all 51 to /tmp/g4t27_figs/ and viewed every one on six contact sheets plus fourteen at native size; then the four built article pages and the L01 quiz page at 800 px. Fixed on the render: the turbine's blades and motion arc ran out of the frame (tower 170 → 125, the arc now inside; the machine label moved to a leader on the right, clear of the blades); the dam's wheel sat in the river band and the MOVING WATER chip covered the pipe (the frame grew to 280, the wheel moved up onto a drawn shaft to the machine, the chip sits above the pipe); the panel's "wire" label sat on the wire (moved beside it); the plants rule card's third line overran its 460 frame (card widened to 560). Guards: Topic 18's table asserts every cell fits its column (the sun-panel table and the sky log pass); the module writes no SVG ids. Each placeholder shows its note; captions never say "real".

v2 — reviews applied (2 October 2026)

Skill: course-build → write-lesson → write-video-script (L04 beats 1 and 3), write-mcqs (every item change; the key-tell checker to 0), write-explanation (fb and why lines), review-figures (author re-render after every drawer change; the built page read at 1200 and 360 px) @ fb37d14

In plain words. The three reviews found the topic's science sound and its shape soft in four places, and all four are fixed. (1) The item cards are now built for a phone: the frame shrank from 560 to 424 units and the text grew to 17, so a nine-year-old reading on a 360 px phone sees 13 px letters instead of 6; the carrier chips ride above the boxes instead of sitting on a corner; every item-card box is the same pale grey, so no tint whispers the answer; and where the chip is the thing asked, its arrow is grey, so the arrow's colour cannot rule an option out. (2) Eighteen keys that a reader could spot by length or shape are now the same shape as their distractors (the key-tell checker reads 0 of 112). (3) The L04 video now says the two lines its quiz leans on ("Everything has some energy"; the heat boils water and the steam pushes a wheel), so a video-only learner can answer L04-q2, L04-q7, PP-38 and PP-46. (4) The words: Topic 27 never names the big building that burns wood chips (Topic 28 coins "power plant"), keeps "energy resource", and puts FOOD on the eater arrow — Grade 4's one word for that hand-over, as Topic 34 prints it. Two coordinator additions landed in the same pass: the FOOD convention, and a compact=True form of the source card that Topics 34 and 35 can import in place of their own chain_card.

In plain words. Reader C read the whole v2 bundle cold (119 items) and agreed every key; the one hedge was the still brick (L04-02), where a careful child who had learnt "a cold log still has energy to give" could defend either answer. The key stays "yes" (the course's rule, Grade 3 Topic 12: "Everything has some energy, in different types"), and the stem now asks it so that "yes" is the only honest reading: "Does the brick have any energy at all?" Reader C's shape notes are all applied; the three children are no longer three Ma- names (Maggie is now Ayesha); and the phrase the quiz stems lean on, "source card", is now said on the page under each lesson's card. Nothing else moved: keys keep their letters and meanings.

Every key agreed by two blind readers (119 items each; MCQ disagreements 0 for both; PP-48 multi A, B matched; the six typed answers on the lists; the FRQ model in the key's words). The science reads clean. Both readers' main weakness is the same: in nine items the key is the only full causal sentence beside short or absurd distractors (the key-tell checker flags 18 of 112). The intro poll is not bundled by design.

The guidance, questions and accuracy review (2 October)

Skill: course-build → review-lesson (Roles B, B2) · review-questions · review-accuracy @ 80719f4 — non-author review, filed by the coordinator from the reviewer's report

Topic 27 — guidance, questions and accuracy review, 2 October 2026

The science is right and the chain is taught cleanly four times. The two things that matter are cross-topic: Topic 27 coins "energy resource" while Topic 29 says "energy source" 64 times and Topic 28 three times; Topic 27 says "power station" while Topic 28 coins "power plant" and Topic 29 says "power station" 30 times. Inside the topic: L04's video never says "Everything has some energy" or the steam-pushes-a-wheel line, so a video-only learner cannot answer L04-q2, L04-q7, PP-38 or PP-46; the L03-10 card says "the cabin" under a houseboat stem; the key-tell flags are real (16 of 18); PP-01/02 and PP-03/04 are within-bank twins. Re-performed: scripts 149/149/150/145, intro 120, summary 169, articles 356/376/291/355 (longest idea run ≤5); bank 13/12/12/13 per atom, keys A13 B13 C9 D10, one true option each; checker 0 FAIL / 13 WARN.

Coordinator's ruling on the cross-topic words (applied without asking James; recorded on the Needs-you page): "energy resource" everywhere on Topics 27, 28 and 29 (the register's name; Topic 29's L01 opens "An energy resource is a thing in nature that people get energy from."). "Power plant" is the US word and Topic 28 coins it; Topic 27 says "a big building that burns wood chips to make electricity" (no name), Topic 29 says "power plant". The Topic 28 and 29 fix passes carry their halves.

Key-tell checker: KEY TELLS: 18 of 112 MCQs flagged (a: 16, b: 9, c: 1) — 16 real; L04-q4 (c) is a proper-noun false positive; L04-q1 / PR-2 are Grade 3's recall sentence (equalise the distractors).

Author's three questions: (1) keep "energy resource" — yes, with the cross-topic change above; (2) keep the plain "light, not warmth" line and item — yes; (3) keep the three long articles as one each — yes; move dam_photo up one line in L02.

Blind-read rulings: PP-36: state the bare-ENERGY convention on the page and make the options four chip words. L03-10: re-card ("the houseboat"). PP-45: re-stem so "bark" is not right. PP-29: distractors become tempting light-givers. Reservoir: add the L02 line.

The figure review (2 October)

Skill: review-figures @ 80719f4 — non-author figure review with the page pass, filed by the coordinator from the reviewer's report

Topic 27 — figure review, 2 October 2026

What a student notices first: clean three-box cards with a blue PUSH arrow and an orange ELECTRICITY arrow, one shape through the topic — then that the ELECTRICITY chip sits on the corner of the right-hand box on every card. On a phone the cards are unreadable (12-unit text in a 560-unit frame shows at 6 px).

Must fix before a cold read

  1. Chip over box, every three-box card (16 keys + cards_four). ELECTRICITY chip overlaps the right box by 5.3 units over its 18-unit height; NO LIGHT / NO ELECTRICITY on card_sun_night by 15. Fix in source_card: gap 74 → ~100 or dy=-42.
  2. Phone legibility. Card text 6.0 px at 360 px wide; dam and turbine labels 5.5 px; tables 6.5 px. L01-10, L02-10, L03-10, PR-4, PP-19/20/23/29 cannot be answered on a phone. Fix in the drawers (box/chip size 12 → 15–16, labels 11 → 13), not per figure.
  3. Item-card first-box tint cues or misleads. q_card tints the first box COOL whatever it holds: q_card_ranch and pp_card_sail_in cue the wind; pp_card_panel_in mis-cues toward the wind when the key is the Sun; "the Sun" sits in a blue box where card_sun draws it peach. Fix: item-card boxes all PALE.
  4. PP-29 (pp_card_panel_in) hands over its key — LIGHT chip into "the solar panel" leaves only "the Sun". Blank the LIGHT chip too, or ask for the carrier.
  5. L03-10 (q_card_panel_carrier): last box "the cabin", stem "houseboat". Rename the box.
  6. Blank-chip arrows keep their colour. On q_card_panel_carrier, q_card_log_carrier, pp_card_hay, pp_card_turbine_out the orange arrow rules out "a push" before the student reads. Draw the arrow MID grey when the chip is the ask.
  7. dam_moving / dam_shut / dam_headache: the wheel's lower paddles sit in the river, the house stands in the river band, the pipe is flat while the caption says it falls. Raise the pipe and wheel ~20 units, end the river before the house, slope the pipe.

Page pass

Built and opened L01–L04 article, L01–L04 quiz, practice, PP100 and summary at 1200 and 360 px. Every figure renders on the page as alone; placeholders show their notes; blind comments stripped. check_svg_ids.py: 51 figures, 0 ids, PASS. Verdict: PASS on desktop; FAIL at phone width (item 2). Each article prints the rule three times (rule block, rule_card, caption) — drop the rule_card from the article.

Unplaced keys (9)

card_wind_headache, turbine_headache, dam_headache, panel_headache, card_sun_night → delete. q_card_mill, q_card_oats, q_card_panel_box → delete (or swap q_card_panel_box in for L03-10). cards_four → keep as the summary video's asset, not a page figure.

Convention check

Source left, device middle, one arrow size and direction: yes. PUSH where a push hands energy, ENERGY-colour elsewhere: yes; the food card's bare ENERGY chip does not break it. Imports as drawn; the thin wind arrows and pipe arrows are hand-drawn (import-rule minor). Captions never say "real". Blind/alt on all 14 item cards list boxes and chips only. Briefs complete; none states the one thing the eye must land on first (add at the picture stage).

Minor

turbine "wires" label 0.8 units out of frame; panel_day leader ends on the roof 3 units above the panel; panel_night chip covers the moon; dam MOVING WATER / PIPE SHUT chip lies across the wall; "the lake behind the dam" sits in the sky; dam water hits the wheel at axle height.

Reader C's full re-read of the v2 bundle (2 October)

Skill: review-lesson @ e23b67f — Role A (blind key reader), Reader C, cold read of BLIND_BUNDLE_G4T27.md (v2) only.

Takeaway

The bank reads cleanly for a Grade 4 student: every item has one option I would pick, the chip words (PUSH, ELECTRICITY, LIGHT, HEAT, FOOD) mean the same thing on every card, and no card description names the box or chip it asks for. Three things I would fix before shipping. L04-02 (does a still brick have energy?) has two defensible answers — the topic teaches that a cold log "still has energy to give", so a careful child says yes, while the lesson's likely contrast case says no; the stem needs "energy to give". PP-49's key is longer than its neighbours by a clause ("as they grow"). And the three claim-makers are Maddox, Maggie and Malia — three M-a names a nine-year-old reads as one child. Minor: L02-11 and L04-06 keys are the only option with "and"; PP-09's key is the only option without "only"; PP-33 to PP-36 key C four times running; PP-19's "a street lamp" is a second light source.

In the lamp, the electricity makes light." Award: push by moving air; blades turn the machine that makes electricity; wires carry it; lamp gives light
