1. Should "function" be said once beside "job"?

TEKS 5.13A says "structures and functions"; the lesson says "the job it does", Grade 3 and 4's word, and never says "function". A child who meets "function" on a released test will not have met the word here.

Built: "job" throughout, no "function". A one-line fix would be one sentence in Lesson 1 (Same place, different structures: how each kind survives there) after the coining, said in passing and never tested: "Grown-ups call the job a structure does its function."

My recommendation: say it once, untested

The lessons (5)

Each lesson in teaching order: its one-line summary, the article, the script and the quiz, then your ruling.

Topic 29 · Lesson 1 · Video / article words: 149 / 374 · Quiz items: 9 · Figures: 6

Lesson 1 Same place, different structures: how each kind survives there

In one place each kind has its own structure that helps it survive there; the saguaro's stem stores water, the Gila monster's tail stores food, the jackrabbit's ears heat the air; the same ears in deep snow are no help; "structure" coined

Topic 29 · Lesson 2 · Video / article words: 148 / 353 · Quiz items: 9 · Figures: 6

Lesson 2 Behaviors that raise an animal's chance of survival

A behavior can raise the chance of survival: the kit fox hunts at night (out of the heat), geese migrate (to food), a groundhog hibernates (on stored fat), quail huddle (warm); "behavior", "migrate", "hibernate" recalled

Topic 29 · Lesson 2b · Video / article words: 144 / 312 · Quiz items: 8 · Figures: 5

Lesson 2b Born knowing or learned: both can raise the chance of survival

The cub drank milk by instinct and learned where the berries are; turtle hatchlings crawl to the sea by instinct; a young orca learns pack hunting; an instinct and a learned behavior can both raise the chance of survival; Grade 4's two sentences recalled

Topic 29 · Lesson 3 · Video / article words: 148 / 397 · Quiz items: 9 · Figures: 5

Lesson 3 Predict who pulls through when the place changes

Offspring of one kind are alike but not the same; "individual" coined; thick fur in the coldest winter, thin fur in a hot summer, a tail tip makes no difference; the faster rabbits when a coyote comes

Topic 29 · Lesson 4 · Video / article words: 149 / 395 · Quiz items: 8 · Figures: 3

Lesson 4 Why those individuals pull through

The two versions were there in November; a living thing does not change its features by trying or wanting; thick fur held in the warmth; the winter gave no fox a new feature, it only decided who pulled through; Hana's claim answered
