The lessons and their rules

LessonAtomRule sentence
L01 Humidity is water hiding in the airEAR5-010Humidity is how much water vapor the air is holding. A lot of water vapor: a high humidity. A little water vapor: a low humidity.
L02 Air pressure is the air's pushEAR5-011The air pushes on everything it touches. This push is called air pressure. The air pushes harder: higher air pressure.
L03 Measure the whole weather pictureEAR5-012A barometer measures air pressure. A hygrometer measures humidity. An anemometer measures wind speed. For each column, read the instrument that measures that thing.
L04 Read a line graphSR5-020One dot for each reading. Find the day, go up to its dot, follow across. Only the dots were measured.
L05 Which way is the data going?SR5-021Compare the first dot with the last dot. Dots climb: rising. Dots drop: falling. Dots stay about the same height: staying level.

The intro script (111 words, about 56 s)

Here's Miss Moreau's class at the school weather station in Tampa, Florida, one May morning. Nadia reads the thermometer, the wind vane and the rain gauge. Three readings go in the class table. But the air feels damp and sticky, and none of the three readings measures that. So what else is the air doing, and how could the class measure it? Every weather station faces the same question. To find out, we will look at the damp feeling in the air, the push of the air, three instruments that measure them, and a week of readings on a graph. Okay, so are you ready to measure the whole weather picture?

The question types (from TYPES_G5T13.md)

  1. Type 1 (easy · MCQ, the humidity set · 010): high or low, from how much water vapor the air holds (hot or cool air) — high / low / the same as the temperature / zero (rotated)
  2. Type 2 (easy · MCQ · 010): what damp, sticky air is holding a lot of; which sentence tells you the humidity is high — water vapor vs rain drops, dust, smoke; four sentences, one about the water vapor
  3. Type 3 (medium · MCQ · 010): which of two equally warm mornings holds more water vapor; which of four described days has the lowest humidity — the two mornings + both / cannot tell; four described days
  4. Type 4 (easy · MCQ, the quantity set · 010, 011): which word names how much water vapor the air holds; what the air's push is called — temperature / air pressure / humidity / wind speed
  5. Type 5 (easy · MCQ · 011): what pushes on a thing the air touches (a kite string, mailbox and car; a book; a floating balloon) — all three / only one; four statements; the air from every side / nothing / only Earth's pull / only the floor
  6. Type 6 (easy, medium · MCQ · 011): on which day the air pushes harder (higher pressure); where the pressure is higher (mountain top or bottom); the correct reason a sealed bottle dents; which day pushed harder from two barometer readings (leans on 012) — the two days / both / neither; four reasons
  7. Type 7 (easy · MCQ, the quantity set · 012): what a named instrument measures (the inverse of the quiz's instrument-for-a-quantity pick) — temperature / air pressure / humidity / wind speed
  8. Type 8 (medium · MCQ, the quantity or unit set; two with a drawn unnamed display · 012): what an unnamed display measures (cups and miles per hour; a box and a percent); which unit a hygrometer / an anemometer reads in — the quantity set; the unit set
  9. Type 9 (medium · MCQ; one drawn display, one drawn pair · 012): which number goes in the table and under which heading (drawn barometer); which instrument fills a new Humidity column; which of two hygrometers shows the damper air (leans on 010); which column–instrument pairing is right — four number-heading pairs; the instrument set; the two cities / both / cannot tell; four pairings
  10. Type 10 (hard · MCQ, claim-reason · 010, 011, 020): the correct reason the named child is wrong (humid = hot; air cannot push; every point on the line was measured) — four single-statement reasons
  11. Type 11 (medium · MCQ, four numeric or day options, a drawn line graph · 020): the value on a named day or time (on a numbered line, or between lines); the day a given value was read; how many readings five dots are — four values ascending; four days; 1 / 5 / 10 / every point
  12. Type 12 (hard · typed · 010, 011): the one word for how much water vapor the air holds; the two words for the air's push — humidity (+ article, child spellings); air pressure (+ article, child spellings)
  13. Type 13 (medium, hard · MCQ, the direction set (rotated); a drawn graph or table · 021): which way the data is going (a level set; a rising set; a falling set; a level table; a level set with one bump — hard) — rising / falling / staying level / rising and falling by turns
  14. Type 14 (hard · typed (a reading, a difference, a direction word) · 012, 020, 021): the number that goes under Humidity from two displays; a reading between the numbered lines; how much narrower the puddle got (two reads and a subtraction, the calculation line in the why); the one word for which way the Cheyenne wind data is going — 95; 68; 50; falling (+ forms)
  15. Type 15 (medium, hard · MCQ · 021): a falling pond: deeper or shallower on Friday; which value COULD be Friday's after a falling week (hard); which way from 8 am to 2 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm (hard) — deeper / shallower / same / cannot tell; four depths; four two-part directions
  16. Type 16 (hard · multi-select · 012): the TWO instruments a class must add to measure air pressure and humidity — the instrument set, keys barometer + hygrometer

Five lessons for five atoms in Miss Moreau's class in Tampa, with Mira, Micah and Nadia; the first Earth and Space topic, so the page opens with the 88-word "Before we start: Earth and Space" video.

Mira steps out of the school door on a clear August morning and her T-shirt sticks to her back, so L01 teaches that the dampness is water vapor the air is holding, and names it humidity; four days at the same door show that the water vapor decides it and warmth does not, and Mira's "humid is just another word for hot" is answered after the fourth.

Micah caps his empty bottle on the hot bus and finds its sides dented in an hour later, so L02 teaches that the air pushes on everything it touches, and names that push air pressure; the cooled air inside pushed out less hard, so the air outside pushed the sides in.

Nadia reads the three Grade 3 instruments and three new ones on Monday morning, so L03 adds the barometer (millibars), the hygrometer (percent) and the anemometer (miles per hour) to the class table, with Grade 3's "For each column, read the instrument that measures that thing".

L04 puts the week's temperatures on a line graph and reads Wednesday's dot (74 degrees); Nadia's "the line passes 73, so it was 73 on Tuesday night" is answered: only the dots were measured.

L05 asks which way each of the week's three graphs is going: compare the first dot with the last; rising, falling, staying level; one small dip does not change it.

The non-author review is applied (ten must-fixes, eighteen worth-fixing); the two cold readers are next. Pictures are placeholders until the cold read is done.

Questions for James

Applied without asking

One sentence a meteorologist would strike. L02 said "Cool air pushes less hard than warm air" of air in general; cold surface air is the high-pressure air of a weather map, and Topic 14 teaches pressure and weather next. The sentence is now said only of the bottle, in the article, the video and the For-James text: "the air inside the bottle cooled down, and the cool air inside pushed out less hard."

Nine items that were the lesson's own checks with a noun changed. The bank's hot bus, book in Maine, floating balloon and library, the practice set's gym, the summary's anemometer question (L03-q9 again), the Monday/Tuesday humidity pair, the five-dots count and the falling-river transfer are each re-scened or re-designed (a hot attic; a backpack on a hook; a soap bubble; a museum; a bakery; "how hard the air is pushing" → a barometer; Saturday/Sunday by feel; three dots → 3 readings; a well's level, June to August). No key letter moved.

Bite-size. L03 lost three Grade 3 recall drawings, a duplicate empty table and a duplicate line (448 → 434 words, 15 → 11 figures); L04 lost a 22-word instrument list and a duplicate pressure graph (457 → 436, 10 → 9); L01 lost a repeated line and its two cool-day figures now follow the lines that introduce them (401 → 388); L05's closing triple graph stays in the video only. L03's video now coins millibars ("Its unit is called millibars"). The intro no longer promises a storm this topic does not explain (118 → 111 words).

Items and figures. Five display items read their value off the screen instead of the stem; the anemometer card on L03-q7 is unnamed so the cups are the cue; three "the same graph" stems stand alone; PP-16's key sits in its distractors' frame; "humid" gets a steering line on every typed humidity item; seven figures placed on no page are removed (77 figures); the digital displays and small tables show at their own width instead of stretching to the column.

After the cold read

Nothing waits on you. Two cold readers take the re-cut bundle; any key they disagree with comes back as a card. Then the picture pass starts on the six cartoon and three photo placeholders, and the batch (built, checked, not sent) waits for your Earth and Space go after the Grade 5 sample. One housekeeping item is with the coordinator, not you: the seven-column weather table is too small to read on a phone and needs the shared page builder to let wide tables scroll.

What the review found, and what changed

The non-author review (8 October): 40 findings, 28 applied

Must-fix (10, all applied): L03's video dropped "millibars" bald; nine items that reused a lesson check's scene or move (PP-17, PP-9, PP-11, PP-43, PR-15, PP-15, PP-34, PP-39, SUMMARY-v2). Worth fixing (19; 18 applied): the general "cool air pushes less hard" sentence scoped to the bottle; seven unplaced figures removed; L03's staging imperative; L03 and L04 trimmed (figures and duplicate lines); L01's figure order and repeated line; L05's closing triple graph; five display stems that printed the reading; the named anemometer card; three "the same graph" stems; PP-16's odd-one-out key; PP-3 and PR-5 re-scened; the intro's vague link and storm; stretched frames capped; a recall-bank distractor; "humid" steering lines and two contractions accepted; a stale For-James clause; and one NOT applied — the wide table at phone width needs the page builder. Simplification-leave (7): the hygrometer's percent without saturation; first-dot-to-last as the whole direction rule; Micah's premise unanswered; the cool-damp-morning case across quiz, summary and bank; two readings in prose on PP-19; the term in later stems; PR-12's two-clause options. Not an error (4): millibars coined; L05's fact-form block and typed item last; the figure conventions queried; the bare No after a question.

Gates after the fixes: check_topic 0 FAIL (S46 B = C = D = 0); check_terms no hits; check_g5_articles 0 FAIL (388 / 390 / 434 / 436 / 332; intro 111; summary 171); check_key_tells 0 of 122; check_svg_ids PASS (77 figures); check_lessons 0 FAIL, S118 silent; the blind bundle re-cut to blind/2026-10-08-reviewed/ (107 mcq, 14 text, 1 frq, 1 order, 1 multi; 0 verdict words in its drawing lines); the batch rebuilt and check_brief.py clean except the standing summary note. Not sent.
