The lessons and their rules

LessonAtomRule sentence
L01 The parts a model of a system needsSR5-032A model of a system needs every part the system needs. Take a needed part away and the system stops working.
L02 Show how Earth, the Moon and the Sun move, all at onceSPA5-020Earth spins once a day. The Moon travels around Earth once a month. Earth travels around the Sun once a year. All three at the same time, each at its own pace.
L03 Farther away looks dimmerSPA5-030The same light looks dimmer the farther away it is. Two of the same lights: the dimmer one is farther away.
L04 Why the Sun outshines the starsSPA5-031The Sun is a star. It looks far brighter only because it is far nearer. The same light looks dimmer the farther away it is.
L05 What a galaxy isSPA5-032A galaxy is an enormous group of stars. Gas and dust drift between the stars. More stars than anyone could count in a lifetime.
L06 Our galaxy: the Milky WaySPA5-033The galaxy our Sun belongs to is the Milky Way. We are inside it. The faint band across the sky is our galaxy from inside.

The intro script (115 words, about 58 s)

Here's Miss Ueda's class on the school field at dusk, for a star night. The Sun is setting behind the trees, and a half Moon is already up. As the sky darkens, the stars come out, one by one, then by the hundred. Then a faint, pale band shows across the sky. The Sun, the Moon, the stars and that pale band are all up there together. So how do they fit together, and where are we among them? To find out, we will look at a model of Earth, the Moon and the Sun, a flashlight across a field, and the stars. Okay, so are you ready to find our place among the stars?

The question types (from TYPES_G5T21.md)

  1. Type 1 (easy · MCQ, the parts set (the Sun / Earth / the Moon / a star pattern) · SR5-032): which part a described model is missing
  2. Type 2 (easy · MCQ · SR5-032): what to do to find out if a part is needed; what a model that stops shows about the part taken away
  3. Type 3 (easy · MCQ · SR5-032): which of the model's things is an extra thing that could go
  4. Type 4 (medium · MCQ, one on a drawn model · SR5-032): which part a model must include for its job; whether a drawn model (with an extra thing) is missing a part
  5. Type 5 (medium · MCQ, one on a drawn model · SR5-032): what is wrong with a drawn model; which sentence about a model of a system is true
  6. Type 6 (hard · typed · SR5-032): the word for a group of things that work together (system); the name of the part a described model is missing (the Moon / the Sun)
  7. Type 7 (easy · MCQ · SPA5-020): which thing in a fresh model (lantern, apple, pea) must spin
  8. Type 8 (easy · MCQ, the time set (one day / week / month / year, ordered) · SPA5-020): what one spin, one trip of the pea round the apple, or one trip of the apple round the lantern stands for

Six short lessons for six atoms, in Miss Ueda's class with Tariq, Tess and Theo.

Tess has a lamp, a globe and a marble and a brief to show day and night and the Moon's changing shape, so L01 asks whether the model needs all three: the lamp off, nothing is lit; the marble away, no changing shape; a bigger gray ball or a toy rocket changes nothing. A group of things that work together is called a system, and a model of a system must include every part the system needs to work.

Tariq and Tess take the model to the gym, so L02 builds the three motions one at a time: the globe turns (one turn, one day), the marble goes around the turning globe (one trip, about one month), the turning globe is carried around the lamp (one trip, one year), then all three at once, each at its own pace. The model describes the motions and never explains them: no pull, no gravity.

Theo sets his flashlight on a bench at dusk and walks away across the field, so L03 teaches that the same light looks dimmer the farther away it is, and that two of the same lights tell you which is farther.

Tariq at a campsite sees a sky of tiny dots and then the Sun filling the sky, so L04, the capstone, chains three pieces of evidence: the Sun is a star; the same light looks dimmer farther away; the Sun is far nearer than any other star. Distance is the only reason; star sizes are never mentioned.

Miss Ueda's class looks at a telescope photo, so L05 zooms into the glowing swirl until it breaks into separate dots, each a star, with gas and dust between: an enormous group of stars like this is called a galaxy.

Tess at her grandparents' farm in Kansas sees a faint pale band across the sky, so L06 names the galaxy our Sun belongs to, the Milky Way, and shows why we see it as a band: we look along its disc through countless stars.

Grade 3's lamp-ball-marble model (the ball now a globe) and Grade 4's spin and year sentences are reused word for word and never re-taught; the three new words are "system", "galaxy" and "the Milky Way". Nobody voices a made-up belief; the register's two induced beliefs (spin equals the trip; the Milky Way is somewhere else) are met in the lessons and tested as bare claims.

What the review found, and what changed

The non-author review (8 October): one must-fix, nineteen worth fixing, seven left as simplifications

The science is right at Grade 5 and nothing the register forbids is said: the model describes the three motions and never explains them ("gravity", "pull" and "weight" appear nowhere); distance is the only reason the Sun outshines the stars and star sizes are never mentioned; a galaxy is an enormous group of stars with gas and dust between; the Milky Way is ours, seen from inside. The three motions are drawn and animated counterclockwise seen from above, as the real system is from above the north pole. None of Grade 4's ten faults appears, nor the quoted child at the top of a lesson.

Must-fix: a map item named "the white star" and "the yellow star" on two stars both drawn yellow (the stars are now the bridge star and the tower star).

Worth fixing, all applied: five item drawings showed two of the same lights in perspective, the far one tiny, so the drawing answered the question before the rule did (those five items say "one looks dim" in the stem and the drawings are gone; the teaching pair stays); the L02 scaffold's steps leaned on the previous stem (each names its model now); four quiz facts lived only in the article while the video is what a student watches by default (one line each in the script, within the cap: the extra thing, the Moon's same path, the same-kind condition, every star seen one by one is inside it), and L04's by-day item was Grade 3's fact, so it moved to the recall bank; the L01 script paraphrased its own coining and test line (now the lexicon's words); L01 and L02 were long (447 and 422 words; now 400 and 393, with the five top views shown at their own width so the L01 page is a third shorter); the one light-time sentence in L04 (eight minutes; four years) taught an untaught idea in one unsupported line and fed no item (cut); Grade 3's lamp strip said SMALLER under a rule that says DIMMER (the chip now says dimmer); one hard bank item leaned on a star that "gives out far more light than the Sun", the factor the NGSS boundary excludes (now the register's own evidence demonstration: two of the same lamps, one near and one far); two bank items were the practice set's items with a noun changed (re-scened: an orange for Earth; "Which of these is the Milky Way?"); the first and second star were letters in disguise; Tess was the claim-maker twice (one is Tariq's); three "says nothing about" lines; "a different Moon"; "circles" for "travels around" in a summary bullet; two clunky stems; the L02 screen cues now name the sense of each motion for the renderer.

Left as simplifications, recorded: the Milky Way as a flat disc (no bulge or halo); "every star you can see one by one is inside it" (true to the naked eye); "about a month / about 12 / about 365" (no sidereal-synodic distinction); "a star pattern" as the fixed parts set's fourth option; the turbine model "with no fan" (a child might blow on it); the animation's slowed paces, said on the chip; the checker's S26 line on L05's typed term (an adapter artefact).
