The lessons and their rules
| Lesson | Atom | Rule sentence |
|---|---|---|
| L01 The signs that a new substance has formed | MAT5-040 | A gas is made. A color change that stays. A new solid appears. Warmer or colder by itself. |
| L02 New substance, or just a mixture? | MAT5-041 | Check for the signs. A sign means a new substance formed. No sign means just a mixture. |
| L03 Warmth changes the pace of a change | MAT5-042 | Temperature rises: the change happens faster. Temperature falls: the same change happens slower. True for every kind of change. |
The intro script (118 words, about 59 s)
Here's Jude in the school kitchen, making pancakes. He stirs flour, milk and an egg together in a bowl. Then he pours the runny batter into a hot pan. Bubbles pop up all over it, and it turns golden brown. Stirring made the batter, and the hot pan made the pancake. But only one of those made something new. Which one was it, and how can you tell? To find out, we will look at the signs that tell you something new has formed, how to tell something new from just a mix, and how warmth changes how fast a change happens. Okay, so are you ready to find out how to tell that something new has formed?
The question types (from TYPES_G5T10.md)
- Type 1 (easy · MCQ, the four-sign set · 040): a described mixing: which sign is this — a gas is made / a color change that stays / a new solid appears / warmer or colder by itself
- Type 2 (easy · MCQ · 040): which of four happenings is a sign (three are the taught near misses: drying, melting, boiling, a sun-warmed cup, a wet look, a color a substance already had) — four happenings
- Type 3 (medium → hard · MCQ · 040): why bubbles count as a sign; which happening is a mix warming BY ITSELF; which test shows the bubbles are a new gas; the claim's correct reason (hard) — four reasons / four happenings / four tests
- Type 4 (medium → hard · typed and one multi · 040): the one word for what is being made when bubbles rush up with nothing heating the cup; the TWO signs in one scene (multi, hard) — gas, with child spellings / the four-sign set
- Type 5 (easy · MCQ · 041): four things mixed into four containers, each with its happening: which mixing made a new substance — four "thing, which happening" phrases in one frame
- Type 6 (medium · MCQ · 041): what the mixed thing is now / what the container holds / which sentence is true after a described mixing — four states: still itself in a mixture / a new substance / gone / turned into the liquid
- Type 7 (hard · MCQ and typed · 041): the claim's correct reason (the dissolving trap); which of two happenings in one scene is the sign; the one word for what a sign-free mixing leaves (typed) — four reasons / four happenings / mixture, with child spellings
- Type 8 (hard · multi · 041): the TWO mixings of four that made a new substance — four "thing, which happening" phrases
- Type 9 (easy · MCQ, the pace set · 042): a named change and a temperature that rises or falls: how does the change go now — faster / slower / at the same pace / not at all
- Type 10 (medium · MCQ, drawn four-row table · 042): four places with their times: where did the change happen fastest / slowest — the four places
- Type 11 (medium → hard · typed and MCQ · 042): the pace word produced from a temperature that rises or falls (typed, hard); the place that slows a new-substance change the most; the sentence true of BOTH kinds of change; one object drying and rusting at once — faster / slower, with child spellings; four places; four sentences
Three lessons for three atoms in Miss Jiménez's class, with Jude, Kaia and Kieran.
Jude pours vinegar onto baking soda and the cup fizzes over, so L01 teaches the four signs that a new substance may have formed — a gas is made, a color change that stays, a new solid appears, the mix gets warmer or colder by itself — each shown on a real cup before it is named, then the two look-alikes that are not signs (a boiling pan, a cup warm from the sun).
Jude's two cups, one quiet and one fizzing, are sorted in L02: no sign means each substance is still itself, just a mixture; a sign means a new substance formed. Kaia says the salt that vanished made a new substance, and she is not right: a dissolved material is not gone.
Kieran's dough rises high on the warm windowsill and barely rises in the fridge, so L03 teaches that a rise in temperature makes a change faster and a fall makes the same change slower, for changes that make a new substance and for changes that do not.
"Substance" is the one new word; "mixture" and "dissolve" are Grade 4's, said in Grade 4's sentences.
The non-author review is applied (five must-fixes, thirteen worth-fixing); the two cold readers are next. Pictures are placeholders until you answer.
Questions for James
Applied without asking
The look-alikes. L01 had said "a sign is a clue, not proof" and "two signs together are strong evidence" while its own table sorted the boiling pan and the sunny cup as NOT signs, and L02's rule says "a sign means a new substance formed". A child would meet two answers to "does one sign settle it?". L01 now calls the boiling pan and the sunny cup two look-alikes that are not signs and ends the section "So before you count a sign, check that nothing heated the mix and that the water is not boiling."; the rule card and the summary lose "These signs are clues, not proof."; the lexicon rule ("may have formed") and L02's rule are untouched. Revert: restore the four lines named in REVIEW_G5T10_2026-10-08.md row 4.
Three items a chemist would strike, re-scened. Bread keyed as going stale slower on a cold day (it stales faster in the fridge) is now a wet handprint drying on a rock; a heat pack that gets hot "when squeezed" (a crystallising salt, no new substance) is now a self-heating meal pack on a cold camping trip; a bank item that keyed a powder dissolving while the cup goes cold as "a new substance formed" (an endothermic dissolving, the one case where "dissolving is not a sign" and "colder by itself is a sign" collide) now has the powder sinking instead. No key moved.
Text. The coin is grounded on the tray's own things ("On the tray are water, vinegar and baking soda: each one is one kind of stuff.") and bridged to Grade 4's word ("Another word for a substance is a material."); the two clear liquids are named once so L02's "the same bath-salt water" refers to something; steel wool in lemon juice turns red-brown, not "dark gray"; a quiz twin (two clear liquids → a yellow solid, in both L01 and L02) and a summary question that reused a quiz scene (salt in soup) are re-scened; one bare "it" in L02's script and one clumsy beat in L01's are rewritten (scripts 148 / 150 / 147 words); the typed pace items accept "gets slower", "goes faster", "slows" and "speeds".
Figures. The cracker's "a brown drop" label ran off its frame (now left of the drop); the single-cup and cracker drawings were stretched to the column with 40 px labels (now a fixed display width); the two-cups cartoon was briefed as Kaia with a salt shaker where the text is Jude's two cups of baking soda (re-briefed); six figures drawn and briefed but placed nowhere are removed, so the picture pass renders six placeholders, not ten.

After you answer
If you leave both terms unsaid, nothing on the page changes. Coining them is two lines in L02's article and script, one summary line, one quiz item and two bank items, plus a register note retired on MAT4-060 and MAT5-041; coining "chemical change" alone is half of that. Either way the picture pass starts on the six placeholders, and the batch waits for your Matter go.
What the review found, and what changed
The non-author review (8 October): 29 findings, 18 applied
Must-fix (5, all applied): the bread item's false key; the click heat pack keyed as a new substance; the dissolving-and-cold bank item; the clipped cracker label; the mis-briefed two-cups cartoon. Worth fixing (13, all applied): the ungrounded coin; "material" beside "substance" with no bridge; the unnamed clear liquids; the "clue, not proof" contradiction; two script beats; a quiz twin; the steel wool's colour; a reused summary scene; a defensible distractor; the typed accept lists; stretched single-cup frames; six unplaced figures. Simplification-leave (6): the instant cold pack as a "colder by itself" sign (the rule says "may"); unnamed powders that heat a cup; the wet shovel that dries and rusts faster; "a gas is made, and a new substance forms"; the intro's pancake question answered only in general; L02's 430-word article (its five-case run needs the positives). Not an error (5): the match test; every other named mixing's chemistry; the one coined term; Grade 4's definition said once with "substances"; the article lengths. The ten Grade 4 root causes were looked for one by one: one "so" before a told fact (fixed with the look-alikes), nothing else. Full table: REVIEW_G5T10_2026-10-08.md.
Gates after the fixes: check_topic 0 FAIL (S46 B = C = D = 0); check_terms no hits; check_g5_articles 0 FAIL; check_key_tells 0 of 97; check_svg_ids PASS (37 figures); check_lessons 0 FAIL, S118 silent; the blind bundle re-cut to blind/2026-10-08-reviewed/ (89 mcq, 7 text, 2 multi; 0 verdict words in its drawing lines); the batch rebuilt and check_brief.py clean except the standing summary note. Not sent.
